A magical spring evening awaits in Wakayama as Wakayama Castle Thanks Lantern prepares to illuminate the sky above the city's iconic hilltop landmark. Held at Sunanomaru Plaza inside the historic grounds, this one-night event invites visitors to gather with friends and family for an unforgettable celebration filled with glowing lanterns, live entertainment, and festival-style fun.

The highlight of the evening comes after sunset, when up to 1,000 hot air balloon-shaped lanterns gently float into the night sky. Illuminated by environmentally friendly LED lights, these fire-free "Thanks Lanterns" offer a safe, modern take on the traditional sky lantern tradition, allowing participants to release their wishes and words of gratitude into the air. As the lanterns drift upward against the backdrop of the historic stone walls and surrounding greenery, the scene transforms into a romantic and dreamlike spectacle.

Festivities begin earlier in the day, with the venue opening from late morning. Visitors can enjoy a lively atmosphere featuring street performances, including juggling acts and magic shows that entertain audiences of all ages. A lineup of gourmet food trucks will also be on hand, offering everything from photogenic sweets to hearty meals, making it easy to sample a variety of festival flavors while strolling through the grounds.

Families will find plenty to enjoy as well, from large inflatable play structures and classic festival games to creative workshops where guests can make their own unique souvenirs.
