Tokyo is one of the best cities on the planet for foodies, with more Michelin stars than any other destination and an infinite number of eateries beyond that. It's easy, however, to overindulge during your time in the capital which makes the light and healthy fare of Island Veggie a fantastic option for those staying in central Tokyo.

Island Veggie opens bright and early at 8am, perfect for those feeling a bit peckish in the morning but not wanting to overload with bacon, eggs or pancakes. Island Veggie's menu has a Hawaiian feel to it, with the principal offering at breakfast being acai bowls. This popular South American fruit, touted for its health benefits, comes as a puree and makes you feel a bit decadent, like consuming ice cream for breakfast. It's light on the stomach, though, and comes topped with a variety of options. Choose from bananas and blueberries, coconut and mango, or a banana and oat bowl with a unique matcha sauce as a "Japanese" twist.

If even an acai bowl is a bit too hearty for your morning meal, Island Veggie has a selection of acai smoothies. The acai, banana and strawberry smoothie was a sweet treat, but I preferred the slightly tangier option of acai, strawberry and veggies. There's even an organic kale green smoothie. Smoothies come in large and small options and are easy to take away for anyone on the go.

Island Veggie's other food offerings include fare like soy chicken nuggets, veggie sandwiches, bean sprout salad and a small selection of veggie-based burgers over the dinner hour.

Seating is at a premium inside the cafe. Only a dozen or so patrons can grab a seat at the two-person tables set up along the side wall. With the cozy, unhurried atmosphere the cafe seems to cultivate, come early or off peak or be prepared to take your food to go.

Island Veggie is easy to locate and is only a one minute walk from Exit 2 of the Hiroo metro station (Hibiya line). Simply exit the metro and turn right. Immediately at the corner, turn right again and take the first right into the small alley. Island Veggie is at the end of the block on the left, but you'll see a sign at the beginning of the alley pointing the way.
