Akita Jizouden Site

The hidden Yayoikko Village in Akita

A Jizoden site can be found right across the street from the Goshono AEON mall in Akita. The surrounding area is modernized with houses, buildings, traffic lights, etc., but this small open area is much like a time capsule. The Paleolithic site has layers of Yayoi era history preserved by the local community. It also has layers of geographical sediment and strata. Neighbors have kept up the maintenance of the buildings on their own time with small donations given to them by the nearby families and businesses.

To see this piece of history is truly something special. Instead of just marveling at the structures from the outside, do try entering the hut and imagine how life was like centuries ago. It is an interactive site that pulls history to the present. If you ever find yourself at AEON mall and would like an escape from shopping and crowds, look for the huts in the park across the street.
