CNN has named the Kansai region as one of their top places to travel for 2025, and it’s not difficult to see why. This culturally rich area, which typically encompasses six prefectures (Nara, Wakayama, Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo and Shiga) in south-central Japan, is a treasure trove of history, cuisine, and modern attractions.

Kansai has already been drawing global attention thanks to the upcoming Expo 2025 (set to run from April to October), and Osaka is a well-known favorite among international visitors with its mix of neon-lit streets, street food, and a welcoming atmosphere. The excellent rail system makes it easy to explore beyond the city limits, meaning that visitors can discover the other gems in the Kansai region.

In Nara, travelers can experience UNESCO-listed temples and interact with the famous deer that roam freely around the city. These gentle creatures are known to bow in gratitude when fed, offering a one-of-a-kind cultural experience.

Hyogo Prefecture was mentioned by CNN as another must-see, especially the city of Kobe. Known worldwide for its iconic Kobe beef, the city offers it at all price points, from casual street food to Michelin-starred restaurants. But Kobe is also emerging as an arts hub, with venues like the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art hosting various world-class exhibitions throughout the year.

Finally, a visit to Himeji Castle, often called the “white heron” for its graceful, bird-like appearance, is a must. However, time is of the essence as ticket prices are set to rise in 2026, making 2025 the ideal year to experience this beautiful historical site.

Getting there

Osaka is served by two international airports—Kansai International Airport (KIX) and Osaka Itami International Airport (ITM).

By train, the shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Osaka Station takes approximately two hours and thirty minutes.
