Tokyo has been named the world’s top workcation destination for 2025, according to the Work From Anywhere Barometer by International Workplace Group (IWG), with the city claiming the number one spot ahead of destinations like Rio de Janeiro, Budapest, Seoul, and Barcelona. As hybrid working becomes more common worldwide, the workcation trend (where people combine remote work with travel) continues to grow.
According to IWG, 60 percent of hybrid workers are more likely to extend holidays to include remote work time compared to last year, with the freedom to work from anywhere becoming a major factor in how people choose jobs and plan travel. In fact, 87 percent of workers say this flexibility increases their productivity, while a similar number report better work-life balance and reduced burnout.
Tokyo stood out in several key areas, earning high scores for broadband speed, safety, transportation, food, culture, and the availability of flexible workspaces. Japan's recently launched digital nomad visa, introduced in April 2024, allows stays of up to 12 months and is seen as a game-changer for international remote workers.
Tokyo also offers an ideal balance between fast-paced urban life and easy access to nature. Mountains, beaches, and national parks are all within reach, making it easy to recharge outside the office. Whether you're working from a coworking space in Shibuya or escaping to the nearby countryside for the weekend, the options are varied and convenient.
