The city of around 39,000 people is a perfect day getaway from Tokyo, a 90-minute drive away. Tourists may visit the Takabe Shrine, the only shrine in Japan that worships the cooking god, or climb the Nojimasaki Lighthouse, one of the country’s oldest lighthouses. There are many farmer’s markets to buy souvenirs and fresh produce from as well.
Minami-Boso also prides itself in its unique form of tourism, with many “hands-on” activities for tourists to do. These include fruit and flower picking, dragline fishing, and surfing. For those who favour hiking, there are many trails by the ocean and through the mountains. Mount Tomi and Mount Karasuba are both listed in “Chiba’s top 100 Sceneries”, and Mount Fuji can be seen from their observation decks.
