Founded in 1244 by Zen Master Dogen Zenji, Eihei-ji (Temple of Eternal Peace) includes over 70 buildings and is a training center for young monks. You can enjoy strolling around the grounds outside the temple, or tour the temple buildings on the inside. There is a lot of beautiful old wood in the floors and stairs, and beautiful cedar trees growing outside. But beware, it is really cold and snowy here in the winter, although very serene. Zen training courses are available. The easiest way to reach Eihei-ji is by bus from Fukui Station. Ask at the Tourist Information Center inside JR Fukui Station.
