Venue Udatsu Townscape, Mino, Gifu

When Oct 12th - Nov 30th 2025, 5:00pm - 9:00pm

Each autumn, the streets of Mino City in Gifu Prefecture are transformed by the soft glow of handmade paper lanterns for the Mino Washi Akari Art Exhibition. Now a long-running local tradition, the event celebrates Mino washi, the city's centuries-old craft of paper making, while highlighting the charm of its Edo-period townscape lined with traditional buildings.

The exhibition fills the historic center with hundreds of illuminated artworks made from washi paper, ranging from highly artistic creations to designs by local students and families. The town becomes a walkable art space where visitors can take in the gentle light reflected on the old wooden facades. On one evening during the exhibition period, the streets are closed to traffic so people can enjoy the artworks freely. The festive atmosphere is enhanced by lantern floats, live performances, and local music, creating a lively yet intimate night out.

Later in the season, the event continues with a quieter display of past award-winning works. The combination of light art and autumn scenery gives Mino a uniquely nostalgic atmosphere. Visitors can also explore nearby spots known for their fall colors, such as Oyada Momiji Valley or the maple trees at Sukeemonsa, both beautifully illuminated at night.
