Japan is home to a wide array of incredible winter events, from snow festivals to sparkling illuminations and many things in between. The Subzero Forest Ice Festival in Takayama is held on the second Saturday of February every year, and it combines icicles and lights for a colorful seasonal display.
Along with the illuminated icicles for visitors to enjoy, there will be stage performances, food trucks, fireworks, sledding experiences, and plenty more.
It might be stating the obvious, but temperatures at the ice festival are chilly – the event organizers recommend attendees dress appropriately with warm clothes and non-slip footwear.
Admission is free of charge, but bring yen if you plan on purchasing food. Donations are also accepted on the day for site maintenance.
Getting there
The event venue is approximately 50 minutes driving time from the Takayama Station area. On-site parking is available but limited, so arriving early is recommended.
For those visiting via public transport, head to Kuguno Station (JR Takayama Line) and the event venue is around 30 minutes away by taxi.
