Overview

Flying underneath the radar of most visitors to Toyko, Edogawa City Ward is an underrated trove of down-to-earth sightseeing surprises. The city's waterfront borders offer plenty of space and there is plenty of heritage dotted throughout. Here is an introduction to some of the landmarks and historical spots of Edogawa and how to reach them.

Crystal View

A solid surprise for many first time visitors is the aptly named Crystal View observatory and deck. Located in the ample Kasai Rinkai Park, this observation deck is of a stunningly modern design; its entire glass walls allow for unobstructed views of the park and the waters of Tokyo Bay.

Edogawa City Natural Zoo

A dream come true for families with children, the free Edogawa City Natural Zoo comes as part of the larger Gyosen Park grounds. Home to a solid array of animals ranging from cutesy farm petting animals to seals, red pandas, and falcons, visitors will also find some more exotic species like giant anteaters and the rhinoceros hornbill bird.

A 15-minute walk from Nishi-Kasai Station on the Tozai Line.

Ichinoe Nanushi Yashiki

Once belonging to the wealthy Tajima family, Ichinoe Nanushi Yashiki is a well-preserved old Edo period farmhouse in Haruecho. The miserly JPY100 admission fee doesn't do the high social status design features justice, including gardens, protected trees, a moat, as well as the property's nagayamon samurai gate.

A 14-miute walk from Mizue Station on the Toei Shinjuku Line.

Shinkawanishi Fire Lookout

Almost 16 metres in height, the Shinkawanishi Fire Lookout stands tall as an example of traditional Japan's firefighting and awareness heritage. Overlooking the Naka, Shin and Arakawa rivers, this wooden tower is particularly pleasant during the spring cherry blossom season with some great views if you get the chance to enter.
