Amidst the flurry of excitement for colorful changing leaves during the autumn months, one type of plant often seems to be forgotten about – and that's pampas grass. Known as susuki in Japanese, the shimmering silver grass can be found in several scenic spots across the Kanto region. This guide covers three of them to explore during the fall season.

Sayama Park, Tokyo

Perhaps better known as a cherry blossom viewing spot during the spring months, Tokyo's Sayama Park still offers plenty for visitors to enjoy during the autumn season. The park shimmers with silver pampas grass from autumn through until winter, and there is also plenty in the way of fall foliage to enjoy around the Yakebe Pond and trident maple forest areas.

Senjogahara, Tochigi

A little further north, Senjogahara in Tochigi's Nikko National Park is another fantastic spot to appreciate pampas grass. The area is a popular spot for hiking year-round owing to the array of flora and fauna (particularly birdlife) on display, and the spectacular mountain views surrounding the wetlands add to the appeal. Come wintertime, heavy snowfall can sometimes mean that the hiking trails are impassable on foot, but many people opt to snowshoe to get a different perspective of the area.

Sengokuhara Plateau, Kanagawa

Kanagawa's Sengokuhara Plateau boasts the largest pampas grass area in the Kanto region, and is seen as one of the preferecture's representative autumn views. One great benefit of a visit here is that it's right in the Hakone area which is renowned for hot springs, world-class museums, and beautiful natural destinations like Lake Ashi. If you're looking for an autumn weekend getaway from Tokyo, this would be a great option.
