One of Tokyo's major powerhouse districts, Shinjuku City Ward is a hub of business, entertainment and culture. Home to score of cultural locations, the museums and galleries of the city cover literally everything. Here is an introduction to just some of the many museums and galleries to be found in Shinjuku and how to reach them.

Fire Museum

Japan's strong firefighting tradition and heritage comes alive at the Fire Museum. Displayed over multiple levels, the museum's exhibits feature, among other things, scale models, uniforms from different centuries, life sized horse and carriage fire 'engines' and, yes, even a helicopter. There is definitely a lot to keep the family entertained at this free museum.

Photographers' Gallery

A gallery space dedicated to the art of photography, the Photographers' Gallery is run by photographers working together to exhibit not only their works but those of other photographic as well. Open during the many exhibitions held each year, the gallery is privately run and offers many photographic works, including books, for purchase.

Samurai Museum

An interactive experience, the Samurai Museum offers authentic displays of traditional Japanese warrior weaponry and armour. The museum has found an enjoyable balance between entertainment and information, making the guided tours, sword battles, and costumed photo opportunities well worth the JPY1900 admission fee.

Tokyo Opera City Gallery

Showcasing contemporary works of fine art, the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery and its sleek modern design stages regular exhibitions with fashion, architecture and design regular subjects. The gallery also supports up and coming Japanese artists. The JPY1200 admission is a good indicator of the centre's quality.
