Cusco Cafe, run by a Peruvian brother and sister team, has become an important part of the international community in Hiroshima City. As a pivotal point for many international residents and visitors, Cusco, and their sister restaurant Tinto, are two of the only truly multi-lingual restaurants in the city. Spanish, English and Japanese speakers will all feel very comfortable and welcome here.

As they are open everyday of the year (no holidays) from 9am-11pm (last order), Cusco's is a great resource for residents and travelers who want a decent meal at a decent price anytime of day.

Opened in November 2002, Cusco Cafe mainly specializes in Peruvian, Spanish, Mexican and Italian foods. They offer the best breakfast and lunch sets around, available every day. For larger groups and parties, there are special group deals and party plans for less than ¥3,000 per person and add an all-you-can-drink deal (90 minutes) for ¥1,500. With a couple of days notice, more specialty dishes and birthday/wedding cakes can also be ordered custom-made.

The menu is one of the biggest I have seen in Hiroshima – sandwiches, pizza, lasagna, paella, quesadillas, spare ribs, smoked meats and cheese, Empanadas meat pies, nachos, tacos, Peruvian dishes, Brazilian sausage, spicy fried chicken, sauteed seafood dishes, grilled meat, as well as ice cream sundaes, homemade cakes and pies. Most dishes from the menu cost around ¥1,000-¥2,000 per dish and are quite generously portioned. Breakfast is served everyday from 9am-11am, the special daily lunch sets (¥900 or less) are available from 11am-3pm. The à la carte and cafe menu is then available between 3pm-5pm and the dinner specials start at 5pm and can be ordered until 11pm.

As is the South American tradition, most dishes are meaty – if you are a vegetarian there are some non-meat choices on the regular menu and the staff are happy to change any dishes you are interested in to suit your needs. The staff at Cusco are always welcoming and friendly, so it's no wonder they have built up their loyal regulars over the years.

The drink menu is similarly impressive as it spans a few pages of wine selections, specialty spirits, cocktails, beers and non-alcoholic options. Happy hour is from 3pm-7pm everyday, when any drink on the menu is discounted to ¥300.

One of the Cusco owners also runs three popular nightlife venues, Mambos, where you can learn and enjoy Salsa dancing, and Barcos, which is a dance club especially popular on weekends when they pump out loud hip-hop and popular dance music for the crowd. They are also behind the annual Sundance summer festival on Miyajima Island, held every August and showcases live music, dance performances and international food stalls.

I've been living in Hiroshima since the mid 90's & still discovering new things to enjoy. I'm a big fan of both the old "wabi sabi" as well as modern and new designs, Japan offers both of these type of places to explore and enjoy. Even after many years here, I am still discovering surprising, fan...
