The Shiretoko Peninsula in the northeastern corner of Hokkaido is one of the wildest and most remote areas in Hokkaido, probably even in Japan. Shiretoko in Ainu language (ethnic group indigenous to Hokkaido) means ‘the end of earth’ and this is how it feels. We joined a guided walk around the five lakes—a very unique experience.
