On a weekend in Japan's busy Golden Week holiday, we had the garden to ourselves. (Photo: Sandra Isaka)

Ibaraki's Flower Hill Hanazono

A lovely flower & herb garden in Kasama

While driving through rice paddies in the countryside in Ibaraki, I noticed many small purple signs that said (in Japanese), 'Flower Hill Hanazono'. We followed the signs and were amazed to find a large, beautifully tended English garden and tea room. Walking around the garden is free, but visitors should take some time to relax on the shop's balcony to enjoy some tea made from herbs grown on the property and a homemade piece of cake. The garden is open from late March to November, and is closed on Wednesdays.
