Hokoku Temple, Kamakura

Hokoku temple, located in Kamakura, is famous as the bamboo temple and attracts not only local tourists but many international visitors each year.

Ashikaga Takauji Ashikaga Ietoki

Said to have been established in 1334 by the Buddhist monk Tengan Eko, Hokoku Temple is also thought to be have been built by Uesugi Shigekane with the support of Ashikaga Ietoki, grandfather of the first shogun of the Muromachi period, Ashikaga Takauji.

The temple is not only recognised in Japan thanks to it being registered as one of the 'Kamakura 33 Kannon sacred sites,' but has also been recognised abroad by being awarded three stars as part of France's Michelin Green Guide Japan.

It is very popular, especially during the summer season when visiting allows you to feel coller within the grove. Sugimoto Temple and Egaraten Shrine, which are historical buildings nearby and not far from Kamakura Station, are also worth a visit.
