A Visit to Kyoto Inari Shrine

Making our way to the top in the 35° heat

August 2012, the baking Japan summer heat. My friend and I decided to go and visit one of Kyoto's most famous shrines: the Fushimi Inari Shrine. Getting there proved to be a bit difficult because only a local train will get you there. Nonetheless, still worth the effort. The shrine itself is a long cobblestone path up the mountain that is lined with thousands of torii, traditional Shinto style gates. This makes for fairytale-like surroundings. I snapped one of the pictures while looking back to the almost completely covered path. After more than an hour passing rows and rows of torii, the small sign that said 'top of the mountain' definitely was a sight for sore eyes!
