Enjoy a Halloween Tea Party inside a Kyoto Cultural Property

An atmospheric setting for an autumn evening

Travelers visiting Kyoto this Halloween can enjoy an evening of seasonal sweets, elegant architecture and theatrical desserts at Chorakukan, a historic Western-style mansion designated a National Important Cultural Property.

The dessert café will host its Halloween Night Tea Party for two nights only, on October 30 and 31, 2026. Built in 1909 as the villa of businessman Yoshibei Murai, the mansion blends architectural influences from around the world, offering an atmospheric setting for an autumn evening in Kyoto's Higashiyama district.

The event features a course-style afternoon tea experience, beginning with pumpkin soup and homemade roast pork before moving on to a selection of autumn-inspired sweets and savory dishes. Desserts include black sesame and blackcurrant mousse decorated with a spiderweb design, pumpkin Mont Blanc tart and berry panna cotta. Guests can also sample Kyoto-style roast beef sandwiches, roasted Kyoto duck and smoked autumn mackerel served with a salad of beetroot and freshly harvested rice.

The grand finale is Baked Alaska, combining sponge cake, kinako and banana ice cream beneath a layer of meringue. The dessert is flambéed in front of guests, creating a dramatic blue flame before being sliced and served with red wine sauce. Complimentary drinks include sparkling wine, tea and coffee.
