The Sendai Kaleidoscope Museum (仙台万華鏡美術館) is a unique museum located in the hot spring resort town Akiu, in the outskirts of Sendai. While kaleidoscopes have generally been regarded as toys for children, a trip to this museum is much more than a fun family-friendly outing. Adult visitors will find the creative artwork displays and outlined 200 year history of kaleidoscopes fascinating and informative. A great mix of interactive exhibits, fun photo opportunities, and rare subject matter make a trip to the Sendai Kaleidoscope Museum an unforgettable experience.

It was easy to see why families, adults, or couples on a date could enjoy this place. There really is something for everyone. All will enjoy the various kaleidoscopes to look through to see amazing patterns and colors. Some have fun designs, such as an elephant or an old man. Art fans can stare in wonder at the intrinsically detailed carved and painted early and modern kaleidoscope designs on display. Couples can take fun pictures in an area where you become part of the kaleidoscope art! Meanwhile, the stubborn anti-artist may find pleasure in learning about the interesting history and developments of kaleidoscopes (however, most signs in Japanese only). If you like taking photos, do keep in mind that some exhibition areas of the museum, such as the historic kaleidoscopes, are not allowed to be photographed. However, I would say all the “fun” stuff is allowed, creating humorous memories with friends or family.

The museum can be enjoyed in 30 minutes to an hour. Probably much longer if with children or you take in the history and appreciate each display item. A museum shop sells unsurprisingly many kaleidoscopes and kaleidoscope decorations, like jewelry. Visitors can make their own kaleidoscope in five to ten minutes for 1200 yen. A fancier style kaleidoscope-making experience sometimes requires a reservation and costs 4000 yen. There is also an online shop on the museum’s website. No restaurant, but nearby eating options in town. Free, but often crowded parking. 900 yen adult admission.

Access via a 30 minute car ride from the city center or a 50 minute highway bus ride from Sendai Station (get off at Matsuba bus stop). The museum is a quick taxi ride or a 15-20 minute walk away from the Akiu Tourist Center. Alternatively, use the tourist center’s free rental bike service.
