Over 1,200 cherry blossom trees were planted along an eight kilometer stretch of Miyagi's Shiroishi River a century ago, and they still bloom beautifully in spring each year. The Ogawara Sakura Illumination event will be held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the trees, which have become one of the prefecture's most popular cherry blossom viewing spots.
The illuminations will run from the beginning of December until January 8th from 5pm until 10pm, providing a fun way to appreciate the trees during the off-season.
Along with the beautiful illuminated trees to enjoy, there will be a number of food trucks present for visitors looking for a bite to eat or drink. Bring yen if you plan on making any purchases.
Getting there
The event takes place along the Shiroishi Riverbank between Ogata Bridge and Suehiro Bridge. The general area can be accessed in around three minutes on foot from Ogawara Station, which is served by the JR Tohoku Main Line.
