Pokémon GO is turning Sendai and Miyagi Prefecture into a giant playground this autumn, with Pokémon GO Wild Area: Sendai/Tohoku combining gameplay with sightseeing across the region.
The three-day event will center on Sendai, with the gameplay area extending throughout Miyagi. The main venue, including Tsutsujigaoka Park, will feature event booths and photo spots, while an in-game stamp rally will lead Trainers to tourist attractions around the city. With Sendai's trees taking on their autumn colors, November also offers a particularly scenic time to explore on foot.
There will be plenty happening in the game, too. Steel-type and Dragon-type themed periods will alternate during the day, changing the Pokémon appearing in the wild. Dynamax Dialga and Dynamax Palkia will make their Pokémon GO debut in Max Battles, while Machamp wearing a modern jacket will appear in raids. Special GO Safari Balls can be used to catch powerful Pokémon, and limited-time Special Research will add another layer to the adventure.
The organizers are also encouraging visitors to venture beyond Sendai. Miyagi offers plenty of opportunities to build a trip around the festivities, from unique foodie options like gyutan grilled beef tongue and zunda mochi in Sendai to Sanriku seafood, Sendai beef, hot springs, and mountain scenery elsewhere in the prefecture.
Miyagi has a longstanding connection with Pokémon, including reconstruction and community initiatives following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Lapras, the prefecture's Pokémon Support Character, is also part of local tourism campaigns. The event comes during a milestone year for the franchise, marking 30 years of Pokémon and 10 years of Pokémon GO.
