There are a myriad of stunning illumination events across Japan during the colder months, and a new one on the calendar adds a National Treasure into the mix. The Matsumoto Castle Illumination event preserves the castle structure by utilizing projection mapping technology in lieu of standard LED lights, and their reflection on the castle's moat creates an ultra-photogenic scene.
The event runs right from the beginning of December until the end of February, so if you're in the area this winter be sure to stop by.
Getting there
Matsumoto Castle is located approximately 15 minutes on foot from Matsumoto Station on the JR Shinonoi Line.
For those who opt to drive, take the Matsumoto IC on the Nagano Expressway, and the castle is around 3 kilometers (approximately 15 minutes driving time) away. Parking is available at the Municipal Matsumoto Castle Gate Parking Area, and it's charged at a rate of ¥ 150 per 30 minute increment.
