Dreaded mall food is actually pretty good when selecting Pizza House Jr. (Photo: Michael Flemming)

Pizza House Jr. Uruma City

Okinawa's original pizza since 1958

I've always wanted to visit the main Pizza House restaurant located inside the beautiful former American Consulate building in Urasoe City, but I never seem to be in that area of the island. I was pleasantly surprised to find a Pizza House Jr. inside of the Ryukyu Aeon Gushikawa Shopping Center (also known as the Jusco mall) in Uruma City at the intersections of Routes 85 and 33.

The Pizza House chain was founded in 1958 in what is now Okinawa City as a family restaurant with a wide menu of selections and using pizza in its name to capitalize on the pie craze that was sweeping America at the time. While Pizza House Jr. may just be a mall food court stand, my family and I found the taste and quality of the food to be something we would have expected from a fancier restaurant location - and we didn't even try the pizza!

Our family selected a kid's curry rice and spaghetti set, a hamburger steak set, and lasagna with garlic bread set, which amounted to about 2,000 yen. The menu also includes Japanese style hamburger steak, gratins, soup, Cantonese style fried chicken, taco rice, Mexican Doria, Texas beef stew, and spaghetti which are all priced at about 700 yen or lower, as well as pizza which is 1,200 yen for a medium, and 1,900 for a large. Pizza House Jr. is located on the second floor of Ryukyu Aeon on the northern end across from Namco Land.
