Spring Breeze of Azumino
Masayoshi HiroseA soft spring breeze caresses your cheek in Azumino of Shinshu region, where 'good old Japan' still remains the same as it was in days gone by.
Founded in 1915 and spread over 15 hectares the Daio Wasabi Farm (大王わさび農場, Daiō Wasabi Nōjō) is the largest wasabi farm of Japan.
To reach Daio Wasabi Farm, take JR Oito Line from Matsumoto to Hotaka Station (30 minutes, ¥320 one way, 1-2 trains/hour). From there, the wasabi farm can be reached in a ten minute taxi ride (approximately ¥1300 one way). On weekends and holidays from mid April through October, there is a loop bus for tourists that connects Hotaka Station with the Daio Farm (10 minutes, ¥500 per ride).

Daio Wasabi Farm is Japan’s largest genuine wasabi farm and also a popular "sightseeing" spot located between Matsumoto and Hakuba.
Many people might think the wasabi we eat at Japanese restaurants or the green wasabi powder that has to be mixed with water is ‘wasabi’. They might be called wasabi but they are not the real thing. They are made from horseradish, mustard powder, food coloring and a sprinkle of real wasabi. I want to meet face to face with the authentic wasabi, so off I go to the wasabi farm of Azumino town, Nagano, ‘The Daio Wasabi Farm’.
The clear steam of Daio Wasabi Farm waters spring flowers in Azumino of Shinshu Region in Nagano, causing them to bloom brilliantly with spring colors.
