Far from Japan's major tourist routes, the Oki Islands offer a striking blend of rugged coastal scenery, deep-rooted traditions, and seasonal beauty that still feels undiscovered. Located off the coast of Shimane Prefecture, this remote archipelago is known for its dramatic cliffs, quiet villages, and unique plant life, much of which can't be found anywhere else in the country.

One such natural treasure is the Oki rhododendron, a rare variety native to the islands. Each year in early May, as these vivid pink blossoms reach their peak, the Murakami Family Oki Rhododendron Garden in Okinoshima hosts a lively Rhododendron Festival timed to coincide with Japan's Golden Week holidays.

Set against a hillside garden filled with around 10,000 blooming rhododendron plants, the festival offers a chance to experience this local flora in full splendor. Visitors can wander through the colorful landscape while enjoying a relaxed program of activities, including live musical performances and small stalls selling regional goods and souvenirs. An outdoor tea ceremony adds a touch of tradition, inviting guests to slow down and take in the surroundings in a more contemplative way.

The garden itself is typically open throughout the flowering season from late April to mid-May, making it possible to visit even outside the main festival dates.

Getting there

The festival location is approximately 30 minutes driving time from Saigo Port.
