The Atami Marine Fireworks Festival originally started in 1952 as a celebration of the area's reconstruction efforts after Typhoon Kitty in 1949 and a devastating fire in 1950. The event has now become synonymous with the Atami area, and is held throughout the year.
The dates for 2024 are:
- Winter: Feb 12th, Feb 24th (Sun), Mar 20th (Wed)
- Spring: April 13th (Sat), May 2nd (Thurs)
- Summer: July 26th (Fri), Aug 5th (Mon), Aug 8th (Thurs), Aug 18th (Sun), Aug 23rd (Fri)
- Autumn: Sep 16th (Mon), Oct 14th (Mon), Oct 19th (Sat), Nov 4th (Mon)
The fireworks display runs from 8:20pm until 8:40pm (8:45pm in July/August).
Part of what makes this event so celebrated is the prime location it boasts for setting off fireworks. Situated right on the water, the venue is surrounded by mountains on the other three sides which serves as a form of insulation for the sounds.
Getting there
The event takes place around the Atami Sun Beach area, which can be accessed in 10 minutes on foot or around 5 minutes by taxi from Atami Station. The station is served by the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, the Tōkaido Main Line, and the Itō Line.
