Nasu Sacred Fire Festival 2026

A celebration of history, legend, and local culture

Surrounded by drifting steam and centuries of folklore, the Nasu Sacred Fire Festival transforms one of Tochigi’s most mysterious locations into a celebration of history, legend, and local culture.

Held in the Nasu Onsen area, the festival traces its roots back to ancient prayers offered to calm the eruptions of Mount Chausu. Sacred fire taken from the mountain was once worshipped as a powerful force of protection, and that tradition lives on today through torchlight rituals and ceremonial performances.

The event is also deeply tied to the legend of the white-faced, golden-furred nine-tailed fox, which is one of Japan’s most famous yokai tales. That connection can be seen throughout the festivities, from fox mask processions and taiko drumming performances to fox face painting experiences for visitors.

One of the biggest highlights is the evening torch procession, where participants dressed in white robes and fox masks walk through the darkness carrying blazing torches before the sacred fire is lit against the eerie backdrop of Sessho-seki.

Alongside the rituals, the Nine-Tailed Fox Market brings together local gourmet food, baked goods, and regional specialties from around the Nasu area, creating a lively atmosphere that blends folklore with festival fun.

With its mix of volcanic scenery, supernatural legends, and glowing firelight, the Nasu Sacred Fire Festival offers a uniquely atmospheric glimpse into the traditions and storytelling that continue to shape the region today.
