For those seeking a unique winter escape, Okukinu Ice Week at Tochigi's Okukinu Onsen offers the chance to immerse yourself in nature and relax in one of the area’s hidden gems. For a week in late February, the event invites visitors to experience outdoor activities, local culture, and the atmosphere of a serene hot spring retreat.
On Day 1, participants can enjoy a snowshoe and snow run tour with local expert Yukari Hoshino, exploring some pristine trails while learning about the area’s natural beauty. Day 2 features a snowshoe adventure to Noshi Falls, where you can witness the spectacular 10-meter-high frozen waterfall up close.
Day 3 brings the opportunity to snow cycle through the winter wonderland with an electric-assist bike, offering a smooth ride through some scenic snowy terrain. On Day 4, try a mix of snowshoeing and airboarding for both exploration and excitement.
On days 5 through 7, the event culminates with a distillation workshop where attendees can gather local plants like cedar to create scented waters, which can be added to beverages for a unique sensory experience. In the evening, there will be the opportunity to relax at the Ice Bar, where drinks are served in ice glasses!
Families can also enjoy a kids area, featuring snow tubing and other fun activities for children.
Advance reservations are required for all activities, which can be made online via the official event website. Sessions are available in the morning and afternoon, with the latter exclusive to overnight guests staying at Okukinu Onsen. Please note that participants must bring their own snow-appropriate clothing and shoes for outdoor activities, and the cost for each experience is 3300 JPY per person.
Getting there
