For travelers who build trips around craftsmanship and design, Tottori Prefecture is becoming one of Japan's most compelling destinations. One reason is Onitsuka Tiger and its new production base, the Onitsuka Innovative Factory, which is bringing fresh attention to this coastal region.
Best known for its sweeping sand dunes and dramatic Sea of Japan coastline, Tottori now offers visitors a direct connection to one of Japan's most influential sneaker brands. The prefecture is the birthplace of founder Kihachiro Onitsuka, and the new factory returns the brand to its roots while opening its creative process to the public.
Unlike traditional manufacturing sites that are closed to visitors, the Onitsuka Innovative Factory is designed as a cultural hub. It brings together material development, design, and production in one space, connecting Japanese craftsmanship with global design perspectives. The facility works closely with the Milan Design Center and the ASICS Institute of Sport Science, where advanced footwear technologies are developed. Visitors can experience not just the brand itself, but the ideas and techniques behind it.
Inside, archive displays and manufacturing exhibits show how heritage designs evolve into modern styles. The "NIPPON MADE" series, known for its meticulous Japanese shoemaking, is produced here alongside high end leather footwear from "THE ONITSUKA." The factory also produces leather bags, highlighting the brand's broader lifestyle focus and offering more for design minded travelers to explore.
A short distance away in Sakaiminato, the Onitsuka Gallery Store offers a retail experience closely tied to the factory. Visitors can find selected "NIPPON MADE" items and place custom shoe orders. With weekday only opening hours, the space has a calm, studio like atmosphere that reflects Tottori's slower pace, in contrast to the energy of Tokyo's flagship stores.
