Toyama's Takaoka Castle Park has made its way onto a lot of lists. It features on lists of Japan's Top 100 Urban Parks, the Top 100 Historical Parks, and the Top 100 Castles - even though the castle no longer exists. If that wasn't enough, it has also been designated as one of Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom viewing spots! There are close to 2000 cherry trees dotting the park grounds, ensuring there is plenty of springtime beauty to go around.

A sakura festival takes place here when the trees are in full bloom, which is typically around the early to mid-April timeframe. Admission to the park is free of charge.

Getting there

The Takaoka Castle Park can be accessed within ten minutes on foot from Takaoka Station, served by the Ainokaze Toyama Railway Line, the Himi Line, and the Jōhana Line.

For those who opt to drive, the park is around 15 minutes from the Noetsu Expressway's Takaoka IC, or approximately 20 minutes from the Hokuriku Expressway's Takaoka-Tonami smart IC. On-site parking is available, but it does tend to fill up quickly during the peak sakura season.
