Inkstones are essential tools in calligraphy and ink painting. An inkstone is a stone mortar with a flat surface where solid ink sticks can be ground with water to produce ink. For centuries, artisans in Ube City have been making Akama inkstones, crafting them from high-quality Akama stones. The intricate process of making Akama inkstones has been passed down for generations and is a treasure of Ube City. These stones are renowned for their ability to create smooth ink for calligraphy.

If you’re interested in learning about the process of crafting Akama inkstones and helpful calligraphy techniques from Ube City artisans, the Ube Convention & Tourism Bureau offers a guided tour in English. The tour takes place at Hieda Gyokuhodo, one of the few establishments that craft the Akama inkstones in Ube City. The workshop starts with an introduction to calligraphy, then immerses you in the process of crafting inkstones. You will be able to experience the charm of Ube City while embarking on an unforgettable artisanal journey.
