The Fuji Shibazakura Festival occurs between April - May every year, celebrating springtime with the arrival of the moss phlox blooms. Its close proximity to Mt. Fuji and other attractions around Kawaguchiko makes it an attractive option for both tourists and locals alike.

What are Shibazakura?

Shibazakura, also known as moss phlox, blooms in Japan around April to May. Although small, these brightly colored flowers can create dense ground cover - resembling patches of moss from afar. Its Japanese name Shibazakura literally translates to “lawn cherry”, as the red, pink, white or purple flowers cover the ground like a lawn.

During the Festival

During the springtime, many Shibazakura festivals are held across Japan. The Fuji Shibazakura festival offers visitors a unique view of sprawling moss phlox fields with a picturesque background of Mt. Fuji. Eight different types of Shibazakura are spread across the festival area, with some blossoms encircling the Ryujin Pond. Visitors can also taste specialty foods from the area, such as Fujizakura pork that can only be sourced from specially-bred pigs in Yamanashi.

A visit to the Fuji Shibazakura Festival is easily combined with the many other sightseeing spots nearby - such as Fuji-Q Highland, Kawaguchiko Panorama Ropeway and more. Find out more about what to do in the Mt. Fuji area, Yamanashi.
