You can choose between many different accommodations, from luxury hotels to the free camping. If you are travelling on a budget but still want a comfortable and easy stay, one of the best options is the Towadako Backpackers Hostel.
Located in the small town of Okuse, in the southern part of the lake, this hostel will offer you a very pleasant experience. The cheapest choice is ¥2,500 for a bunk bed in mixed dormitory while the private rooms start from ¥6,000. All bookings include a free breakfast with toasts, butter, jam and coffee or tea. If you like camping you can also stay with your own tent in the back lawn for ¥1,000.
Although very simple, the atmosphere is very warm and welcoming. The hosts here are kind and always ready to help you. Even though I arrived with no booking and after the check in time, they still welcomed me heartily. As the restaurants around were all closed already, they even offered to prepare dinner just for me and it was absolutely delicious.
While the place only offers showers, you can go to the onsen hotel next door for ¥500.
In addition they have free bike rental, a free kitchen to prepare your food and a comfortable common space where to relax both inside and outside the building. They also organize any kind of activity, from boat tours and kayak rental to guided hikes of any difficulty level.
