<p>This belfry was built in 1791 by the same carpenter who built the temple in 1747. It was used to notify congregation members to gather for monk's sermons</p>

Honganji Temple East Annex is located at the foot of the mountain on top of which the famous priest Rennyo rebuilt Honganji Temple in 1471 after it was destroyed in Kyoto in 1466. This annex itself was built in 1747, one year after the West Annex was built in 1746. Due to the significance of Rennyo in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism in Japan (he is called the restorer of the sect), the entire area including the mountain and the two temple grounds (East and West Annex), is designated as a national historical site. They are named as one place, 'Yoshizaki Gobo Ruins' and it is one of the biggest tourist's attractions in Fukui. It's about a 15-minute taxi ride from JR Awara Onsen Station.
