The Takayama Autumn Festival (also known as Hachiman Matsuri) happens every year on the 9th and 10th of October at the Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine. It is a festival to end the summer season and also to welcome and prepare for Autumn.
Lanterns are hung and food stalls are set up. During the parade, many festival floats (yatai) make their way through the town. It gets very crowded with visitors from around the world wanting to catch a glimpse of the traditional Japanese costumes and intricate wood carvings of the yatai.
Many visitors come to take pictures and videos but most do not realize how much hard work is needed to carry out such a festival, from the costumes, music, choreography to the props. Grab your headphones and experience the detailed sights and sounds of the Takayama Autumn Festival.
