Overview

Tucked away between the Tama River and the much smaller Nogawa River lies Komae, one of Tokyo's western municipalities. A tiny residential area it may be but the city is still home to some interesting historical and cultural sites including ancient tombs, public parks and an old Edo period building. Here is an easy introduction to some of these sites and how to reach them.

Senryu-ji Temple

Originally established in the 8th century, the current structures to be found at Senryu-ji Temple date back to the Edo period. Dedicated to the protection of children, this jizo temple features an extremely impressive two-storied bell tower as well as a serene pond and impressive sanmon entrance gate

Nishigawara Park

Lying along the Tama River, Nishigawara Park is an open public space full of trees. Accordingly, come the spring season, it becomes a rather pleasant area to enjoy the blooming sakura cherry blossoms. A children's play area makes a family visit just that bit more practical for anyone with children.

Kabutozuka and Dagurazuka Kofun

Of a style very different to the modern image of the country, Japan's ancient kofun burial mounds are often a surprise to many. Komae city is home to two such mounds. Dagurazuka Kofun is almost hidden by the buildings surrounding it though a traditional stone staircase helps while further along is the 5th century Kabutozuka Kofun, now registered as an Historic Site.
