かつて厳島神社を管理していた大聖院には、十一面観音や金色の弥勒菩薩像など、たくさんの仏像が安置されています。しかしその中で、最もユニークで親しみのある像は、御成門を入ってすぐ左手にある五百羅漢庭園の羅漢像たちでしょう。五百羅漢は、釈迦から直接教えを受けた500人の弟子たちで、転じて尊敬や布施を受けるにふさわしい出家者のことを指します。秋、紅葉の絨毯に座り、色とりどりの葉を頭や肩に乗せた姿は、どこか愛らしくて、私は一瞬にして心を惹き付けられました。
