I approached the Senjo-kaku from the back, and got the worm's eye view of the balcony at the rear

I have my doubts that this ceiling-mounted compass actually works

There seems to be acres of floorboards. I found a mummified bird's head...

Senjo-kaku has no ceiling, so you can see all the amazing roof beams

Next to the Senjo-kaku is a striking red pagoda, and splendid sago palm

The pagoda catches the light of the westering sun in the evening

The Senjo-kaku is an unfinished shrine built by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in remembrance of his fallen warriors. It has no ceiling, so you can see the beams that hold up the roof. Officially the name of the building is the Toyokuni Shrine. It’s decorated with many artworks, with horses featured prominently. Next to it is the eye-catching red pagoda, the Goju-no-to.
