From mid-December until mid-January, Ibaraki's Hitachi Seaside Park is hosting its annual Warm and Cozy Winter Fair. This celebration highlights the beauty of winter with unique floral displays, cultural events, and traditional New Year’s activities.
The park’s iconic Ice Tulips are a must-see, and they are specifically cultivated to bloom in winter. Visitors can enjoy them at two locations: the Glass House, which hosts around 9,300 tulips in nine varieties alongside views of the Pacific Ocean, or the Memorial Forest Rest House, with approximately 5,200 tulips in 12 varieties. While enjoying these winter blooms, guests can warm up with seasonal treats like Matcha Milk Zenzai or Yuzu Apple Tea, both of which are made with local Ibaraki ingredients.
Another highlight of the fair is the Giant Zodiac Geoglyph, a 32-meter-long depiction of a snake symbolizing rebirth and infinite possibilities. This seasonal artwork is made from natural materials like pine cones and kochia plants, and it's most impressive when viewed from above via the park's Ferris wheel.
Other New Year’s traditions at the event include workshops to make New Year's decorations, calligraphy sessions, and cultural performances like the Mito Domain Daikagura, a traditional acrobatic show. Guests can also sample nanakusa-gayu (seven herb rice porridge), a dish traditionally eaten on January 7th that symbolizes health and renewal.
Winter at the park also reveals a unique view of Miharashi Hill, where frost protection sheets create a snow-like effect as preparations for spring nemophila blooms begin.
If you are planning to visit, please note that the park is closed on December 17th, 24th, 31st, and January 1st within the event dates.
