The Ichinoseki-Hiraizumi Balloon Festival will once again take to the Tohoku skies this autumn, bringing together elite pilots for a high-level competition in breathtaking surroundings. Known as part of the Hot Air Balloon Honda Grand Prix, this event stands as the region's only large-scale balloon contest and has become a highlight on Japan's ballooning calendar.

The festival was first launched as part of recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake and has since taken on a life of its own, becoming both a sporting challenge and a cherished local tradition. Each year it draws participants and visitors alike to Ichinoseki, where colorful balloons rise above a landscape rich with natural contrasts.

What sets this contest apart is not only the scenery but also the demanding conditions. With airspace extending to around 8,000 feet, pilots are tested on precision, adaptability, and strategy in ways that few other environments provide.

Getting there

The balloons will take off and return to Ichinoseki Mizube Plaza, which can be accessed in approximately 7 minutes by taxi (or about 30 minutes on foot) from Ichinoseki Station.
