About Naoshima Island

Naoshima Island is located in the Seto inland sea and is accessible via ferry from Uno Station.

A town bus takes you from the Miyanoura-kou port to either Nokyo-mea or Tsutsuji-so for ¥100 based on where you want to visit first.

Benesse House, Lee Ufan and Chichu Art Museums challenged my basic concepts of art in a good way. These museums enable visitors to be present in the art itself through reflections and shared space. This was especially relevant at ChiChu Art Museum which is located underground. Each piece is created on a large scale and enables you to move around and through the work of James Turrell, Tadao Ando and Walter De Maria.

Although photographs are not allowed inside either of the three museums, there are free open air artworks which I was able to capture. Naoshima island makes you feel like you are the only one there at times as there are no crowds. I would like to visit this place again on my next trip to Japan.
