A visit to Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture wouldn’t be complete without a day or two at Benesse Art Site Naoshima. This contemporary art and architecture facility blends together with the pristine nature of the Seto Inland Sea to create a place for guests to stay overnight. Conceptualized in 1985, Benesse Art Site Naoshima opened its doors in 1992. Since that time there have been numerous projects toward bettering the art site as well as local communities.

In many ways it was the unexpected that took me by surprise at Naoshima. Expecting to find nothing at Lee Ufan museum, but it was the something as well as the nothing that made me reflect about creating moments in time.

More like a grandmother’s house than a commercial café, it is a potpourri of different tables and chairs, of Russian dolls and a quiet but friendly terrier sleeping on one of the side chairs. I stepped in one spring morning in May, with the flower boxes filled with flowers in full bloom, in all different shades of pink and cream, set against the rich green shrubbery. The yellow awning and the quaint sign made it look a bit like a slice of Provence, despite the ordinariness o f the box like building that it is situated in.

Naoshima is not only famous for its art, but also for its local delicacies. The island is known for salt harvesting, and so you can find multiple stores selling packaged salt collected from Naoshima locally. The brand sold at the port is called Solashio. To market its salt products, Naoshima also has a famous "Shio," or salt, cider. The soda tastes faintly of Ramune and Sprite, with a lick of salt.
