Honai Park

A slice of the tropics in the Niigata countryside

Kim Bergström   - 1 min read

A tropical greenhouse is probably the last thing you'd expect to find in the countryside of Niigata, which is more commonly known for its massive winter snowfall than warmth. However, you'll find an excellent greenhouse and pleasant gardens at Honai Park in Sanjo - and best of all, admission is free.

The greenhouse packs in a variety of different plants, with everything from colorful hibiscus flowers to mango trees and pineapple plants on display. Outside the greenhouse, you'll also find a small traditional Japanese garden and an impressive number of rose species.

If you are planning a special trip, do note that the park closes every Tuesday.

Getting there

Honai Park can be accessed in around ten minutes on foot from Honai station, on the JR Shinetsu Line.

Alternatively, if you plan to drive there, take the Sanjo Tsubame IC exit. The park is around 25 minutes from the exit itself, and free parking is available at the venue.
