Kado (which means corner in Japanese) used to be on the corner of a junction on Route 17 in Muikamachi serving up fantastic food in rather dated surroundings. It has since moved to a slightly less visible location and is now serving up the same fantastic food from its plush, newly built premises. It is smack in the middle of its street with no corners within several hundred meters but they have kept the name nonetheless.
I first discovered it when someone recommended their curry for being particularly spicy. Not believing it, I went and ordered the hotter of the two options in spite of a warning on the menu that the medium hot version is spicier than normal. I have since learned that the medium curry is plenty hot enough, whereas the really hot one turns me into a blubbering mess. Their pork cutlet curry is so good that I have a hard time going there and ordering anything else. I don’t know anyone that can get through their really spicy curry comfortably. Even their medium one is more than most people can handle and is a far cry from the bland offering you would usually associate with Japanese curry.
It is one of those restaurants where just about everything on the menu is a contender for your dinner money. Most dishes come as a set meal with a heavy bias towards fried mains as you would expect from a katsu restaurant: different cuts of pork, giant prawns and hamburgers are all great options. They also do an amazing stir fried pheasant dish in a slightly sweet sauce which comes on rice - not your usual item on a restaurant menu and one that quickly had me reaching for a dictionary.
They’ve been in their new location for a few years now and although not quite as prominent as the last one, it is still pretty easy to find; just one turn off Route 17. The interior is clean and stylish and with the large window into the kitchen, it isn’t too far a cry from their previous digs. It is a popular spot with locals and it is easy to see why - great food in generous portions at a reasonable price.
