Shounsanso is a landscaped Japanese garden in Kashiwazaki, Niigata, and it's known for having some spectacular fall foliage to enjoy. There are approximately 600 maples set against 200 evergreen pine trees on the grounds, ensuring some very colorful scenery during the autumn months.
To make the most of the seasonal color, the garden hosts an annual autumn leaves light-up which typically runs from late October until late November each year. The trees are illuminated from sunset (approximately 5 pm) until 9 pm daily throughout the event dates, and admission is free of charge.
Shounsanso is located approximately 20 minutes on foot (or a five minute taxi ride) from Kashiwazaki Station on the JR Shin-Etsu Line.
For those who opt to drive, you can reach the venue in approximately 15 minutes from either Kashiwazaki IC or Yoneyama IC on the Hokuriku Expressway. Free on-site parking is available for up to 180 vehicles.
