While Niigata Prefecture is perhaps best known for its bountiful winter snow, the region also packs a punch when it comes to springtime beauty. Tulips are one type of flower that grows exceptionally well here, and Tainai City holds the title of Japan's top producer of tulip bulbs.
At the annual Tainai City Tulip Festival, around 800,000 tulips in 60 varieties are on display for visitors to enjoy. In addition, there are vibrant yellow nanohana flowers, and an evening tulip illumination for part of the event (Friday April 28th until Wednesday May 3rd from 5pm - 8.30pm).
For those who visit on the last day of the event, there's also the opportunity to experience the process of tulip harvesting.
Getting there
The event venue is approximately 10 minutes by taxi from Nakajo Station, which is served by the JR Uetsu Main Line.
For those who opt to drive, the venue is 5 minutes by car from the Nakajo IC on the Nihonkai-Tohoku Expressway.
