Qantas Names Miyakojima a Top Destination for 2026

Explore a side of Japan that's markedly different from its urban centers

Tourism in Japan has been gaining momentum again in recent years, with international arrivals steadily increasing. Despite this, many visitors still focus their trips around the so-called "big three" destinations of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. While these cities remain major draws (and justifiably so), they represent only part of what the country has to offer. Qantas Airways' decision to name Miyakojima as one of its 26 places to visit in 2026 highlights a side of Japan that feels markedly different from its major urban centers.

Located in Okinawa Prefecture, Miyakojima is around three and a half hours by plane from Tokyo, yet the contrast is immediate. The island is known for its slower pace of life and strong connection to the natural environment. It is also associated with longevity, a reputation often linked to its climate, diet, and outdoor-focused lifestyle. For travelers looking to step away from packed itineraries and crowded attractions, Miyakojima offers a much more relaxed alternative.

Qantas pointed to the island's beaches as a key reason for its inclusion, since Miyakojima is home to long stretches of white sand and clear, shallow waters that are well suited to swimming and snorkeling. Seafood is another highlight, with local restaurants serving fish caught the same day.

As more travelers look beyond Japan's largest cities, Miyakojima stands out as a destination that offers natural scenery, local food, and a different rhythm of daily life. Its selection by Qantas suggests growing interest in parts of Japan that remain under the radar, even as tourism continues to grow.

Getting there

Mikayojima Airport (MMY) can be accessed from Tokyo's Haneda Airport (HND) in approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes. Both major national carriers (All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines) fly the route.
