Sanbutsu-ji on Mt. Mitoku

Mount Mitoku, or "Mount of the three virtues" (Mitokusan Sanbutsji) is an old sanctuary of the Tendai Buddhist Sect. In 706, the pilgrim monk Ennogyoja chose this site to establish a monk-training center,
The path leading to the temples first takes you to many stone stairs. At the top of the stairs, the main temple "Hondo" is surrounded by a grove of thousand-year-old cedar trees. Sign the register here before commencing any climb.
Crossing the small red Yadoiribashi bridge to start and continue over a small stream to enter this sacred place. After a steep climb through lush greenery, you'll reach the top of the ridge.
Above the precipice stands Monjudo, reachable by climbing a narrow stone path (kzuarizaka) assisted by a chain—just like the pilgrim monks used to climb. Enjoy panoramic views of the valley from the top, including the river Mitoku running through deep vegetation.
Continuing your climb, follow the ""umanose" horseback and "ushinose" cowback paths that lead you to the jizodo, and walk by Nokyodo, Kannondo and Motouuikakedo temples. At the end, after passing Fudodo, encounter the national treasure Nageiredo— a temple nestled at the top of the precipice. Admire in awe at the view and marvel at how it could have been built so long ago.
