Each year around the early April timeframe, Tochigi's Ōhirasan Prefectural Natural Park hosts a cherry blossom festival to celebrate the beauty of around 4000 sakura trees in bloom. Trees line the approach to the park for around 2 kilometers, and there are also numerous wild cherry trees that bloom over Mount Ōhira.

For those who can't make it to the park in time for the cherry blossoms, there's plenty of other beauty to enjoy later in the year, including azaleas in May and hydrangeas from late June to mid-July.

Admission to the park is free of charge.

Getting there

Ohirasan Prefectural Natural Park can be accessed within around 10 minutes by taxi from either Ohirashita Station, served by the JR Ryomo Line, or Tochigi Station, served by the Ryomo Line and the Tobu Nikko Line.

For those who opt to drive, parking is available on-site but it does fill up quickly during sakura season.
