A visit to Iya Valley in the centre of Shikoku is a must for anyone wanting to get off the beaten track. You will need a car, a compass, nerves and time. Because you'll be stopping a lot to take pictures, letting other cars past and trying not to look over the cliffs to the left or right.
I recommend staying at Tougenkyo-Iya, a series of thatched roof cottages that are perched high upon a mountain. Self-catering, so make sure you bring some food! You will wake to a stunning view of the valley. The only problem with staying somewhere so beautiful and remote is that you won't want to get out and explore.
